“Down the Road” website and Solar Rechargers

Gadget imageA friend pointed me towards this website which is all about cycle touring and contains a lot of good stuff, including equipment reviews. Being on the verge of a whole new way of life myself, which will hopefully involve lots more cycletouring, I’m particularly interested in bits of kit which recharge other bits of kit, eg mobile phones, mp3 players etc., and Tim Travis (owner of the site) provides some useful information on his experiences.

Couple that to an earlier blog on the subject, not to mention an update, generously provided by the author himself and you’ll find you’re  just beginning to get your head around what’s out there and how it works.  Here’s yet more stuff to take a look at.

  1. If you got the technical know how or a friend who is great with a soldering iron you could make a little gizmos that turn the power from your dyno hub into something that can charge your gadgets.

Which I have had made for me http://www.woollypigs.com/2010/12/staying-charged-while-touring/ it works great charges my phone, mp3 and even my USB battery charger.

  2. I would avoid the offering from Mr Dahon as the case let’s your IPhone do double if not triple flips onto the road and the case screen gets scratched very easily. The mount to the bars isn’t too great either.

The gizmo that does the charging bit from the dynohub simply doesn’t, plus it robs your headlight of too much power, turning it into a cunning impression of one of those big fat never-ready lights from the 80s.
